Things to do

Paparoa National Park
The famous pancake rocks at Punakaiki are just one of the features of our beautiful national park.  Get out there and explore nature!

Tauranga Bay Fur Seal Colony
The seals are a wonderful sight and not one you'll want to miss.

West Coast Tourism
Beach and forest walks, caving, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, jetboating, jet skiing, glacier walks, scenic flights, mountain biking, horse treks, fishing, goldpanning and more!  Allow plenty of time to explore this spectacular region.

Westport and the Northern West Coast
Key information on the Buller Region, in particular history and landscape of the area, events, maps and temperature.

Norwest Adventures

Underworld rafting, adventure caving, Charleston gloworm cave tour and Charleston Nile River rainforest train. Their office is based at the Charleston pub, a two minute drive from the house.

Mitchell’s Gully Goldmine
Marvel at the rebuilt stamping battery, a unique type of gold mining!  Ride in the ore tram through old tunnels, take a walk in the bush, explore old diggings, drop shafts, native orchids and fossils.

The Denniston Experience
A new tourism venture, owned and operated by the local Department of Conservation, giving visitors a guided journey into the lives of old-time Denniston miners.

Eating Out

PortSide Bistro & Bar, Cobden Street Westport
Housed in the old art deco Waterside Workers Union Hall. Come and try their wide range of delicious seafood, beef, venison, lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes, and of course their signature Fish and Chips – their fish are fresh from the waters just two blocks away! Matt and Emma welcome you every day bar Monday.

Star Tavern Cape Foulwind

The floor space cleared to make room for pool and table tennis ensures a convivial huddle at the bar inside the Star Tavern. A small dining hall adjoins it, where you can tuck into plates of ham, fish and chips, or sizeable steaks lashed with garlic butter. Hey, you can walk it off around Cape Foulwind. Recommended by our guests.

Jack's Gasthof Pizzeria & Bar, Little Totara River
Our special recommendation for somewhere really different, inexpensive and just 2 minutes drive from the house, make sure you visit Jack & Petra at their tiny rural eatery and experience a truly unique cafe and bar. No website link available to Jack's but you can book on 789 6501. They tend to close over the winter months so it pays to call ahead to make sure they are open..
